When Jean Racine arrived at his uncle's home in Uzès in 1661, he was a young man of 22 who had experienced the harsh discipline of Port Royal and of the austere Jansenist religious movement of the College ofd' Harcourt. His family had sent him from Paris in the hope that he wouldto make him forget his theatrical vocation and instead prepare his entry into the religious orders. 

romDuring his short stay in Uzès remainhe wrote kept letters in which the future author of 'Athalie' neglectsforgets his theological studies and speaks spiritedly about exploring the garrigue countryside, the charming scenery, the mild climate and ... with enthusiasmgusto about its gastronomy.
