When Jean Racine arrived in Uzès in 1661 he was a young man of 22 who had experienced the harsh discipline of Port Royal. From his short stay in the city remain letters he had written in which he speaks enthusiastically of his exploration of the garrigue country, of the charming landscapes and ... with excitement of its gastronomy.
In those times, Uzes stood within its walls, an architectural ensemble whose first buildings date from the twelfth century. Today, circular boulevards replace the ramparts and the city opens onto the plateau overlooking the valley of the Alzon. The Entraigues hotel was built within the town in the fifteenth century by members of an aristocratic family from Vivarais. The hotel has now been restored to its seventeenth century glory.
The hotel restaurant 'Les Jardins de Castille' with its panoramic terrace provides a seductive rest stop . Air-conditioned rooms can accommodate year-round conferences and events. A former mansion belonging to General Entraigues Pin combines old-world charm and modern conveniences, and now accommodates 34 very comfortable rooms and a lift. Although the hotel lies at the heart of the old city, it is a haven of calm and sunshine.
